Here's a question I hear a lot: "What's the most common marketing mistake you see business owners making?"
And here's the mistake I see most: Taking short-term, tactical actions without a long-term, strategic plan.
In other words, chasing shiny objects.
It's a fact: Most business owners don't PLAN their marketing. They just REACT to daily stuff.
Of course, no plan ever survives intact in the real world. General Dwight D. Eisenhower, who planned a successful project called D-Day (heard of it?) said: "In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable."
So don't try making perfect plans. They don't exist. But do plan -- it gives you clarity and confidence.
To create clear plans and avoid the most common marketing mistake, answer questions like these:
* Who are my ideal clients?
* How can I reach them cost-effectively?
* How much time and money can I invest in marketing tactics to "buy" them?
Otherwise, you're at the mercy of anyone who tries to sell you a shiny marketing object.
Example: I was talking to a very smart guy who runs a $10-million business. He said, "A magazine called and wants me to be in their next issue, about the 10 most influential marketing officers in America. It costs $5,000 for a feature article. Should I do it?"
"Did you plan on spending five grand for print publicity?" I asked.
"No," he said. "But it sounded like a good idea when they called me."
We talked it over and we both saw red flags. It was not a good idea. I talked him out of it and saved him $5,000.
Your takeaway: If you don't have a plan for your marketing, someone else does. And you may soon be parted from your money, with little or nothing to show for it.
And one more thing ...
