Want more referrals for your business?

Use more positive reinforcement.

It works on dogs, college roommates ... and referrals.

It's simple: Any behavior you reward will likely happen again.

* If your dog rolls over, reward her with a treat. She'll likely do it again.

* If your college roommate finally picks up his dirty socks, reward him with a beer. He'll likely do it again.

* And if ANYONE sends you a referral, reward them with SOMETHING. They'll likely do it again.

It's a nice note I got by mail from a tax accountant, Linda Haller. She wrote to thank me for a referral I sent her a while back.

By rewarding me for a referral, guess what? She's going to get more. Because I feel good about sending people to someone as thoughtful as Linda.

Of course, she could have sent me a box of chocolates or money, or something "bigger" than a thank-you card. But it's not necessary. For nearly all people, including me, any tangible token of appreciation is reward enough.

Note that key word: tangible. A thank-you note by mail is tangible.

By contrast, a thank-you text or email is ... intangible. Digital bits and bytes. Nothing you can hold. And, like the campaign promises of a politician, quickly forgotten.

Dollar for dollar, sending a thank-you by mail may be the perfect way to positively reinforce referrals. Which means you are likely to get more referrals.
